Work Together to Weather the Trying Times

The sudden surge of the epidemic might separate us.

Dear students, we are all in a challenging time right now. But after a few years, when you look back on these unique and unforgettable days, the hardships, I believe, will turn into one of the most precious spiritual wealth in your life.

There are countless touching moments these days: faculty and staff volunteered to rush back to the campus under lockdown to deliver meal boxes for over 30,000 students; outstanding medical workers worked round-the-clock to speed up the screening; … but what impressed me most was the spontaneous and sincere tribute from our students to the delivery volunteers who are braving the risk. I saw videos where students would instead give their meals to the delivery team. You, the students, have carried forward the culture of Shanghai Jiao Tong University: be optimistic, diligent, and self-disciplined, support each other, be united as one, and practice gratitude.

Compared with two years ago, we are more prepared as we’re armed with the past experience plus your cooperation and support. On the other hand, coronavirus is that same old enemy we had stamped out two years ago and now know well about.  This time our encounter will be a decisive war, instead of a lasting one! The dawn is ahead, and the sunshine will eventually shine on the earth. Let us set off towards the hope and victory not far away!

Teaching and learning never stop! Among TDLI faculty, some newbies face online teaching for the first time. Combined with tips from veterans and the training courses of the Learning and Teaching Development Center, everyone’s working hard to improve students’ online experience.

TDLI has relocated to Zhangjiang, the student counselor Ms. Du Linchen is the institute’s only faculty member currently on the Minhang campus. She undertakes the expectations of the whole institute and fulfills her duty perfectly. We look forward to her live broadcast, yet hope that she could also use the time to rest.

 Support for our 

foreign members 

A large proportion of our members is foreign nationals. English notice and warm reminders are released in real-time with that of Chinese. Self-quarantine tips and support are shared with the ones in need. Many foreign researchers in Shanghai keep instructing and caring for their students.

Faculty are encouraged to pay special attention to the students.

Students maintain a positive vibe

There are more than 40 TDLI students on the Minhang campus, scattered in 14 different buildings. However, they managed to maintain an attitude of diligence and optimism.

Zhangjiang campus

Since March 9, the Zhangjiang campus has launched an emergency plan according to relevant epidemic prevention requirements and blocked the entry of the building. The property management team cleans and sanitizes the campus every morning and afternoon. The air conditioner and dedicated outdoor air system are turned off, increasing the building ventilation.

On March 13, TDLI organized nucleic acid screening for the construction team and canteen logistics on the campus.

From March 15th, the park has started closed-loop management. The workers from property management, canteen logistics, construction, etc., are designated with independent working areas and routes to avoid cross-infection.
